South Should Retain Power Beyond 2027 Says Babangida Aliyu

🔴 Former Governor of Niger State, Muazu Babangida Aliyu, has said political power in Nigeria should remain in the southern region beyond the 2027 general elections, urging adherence to the country’s informal zoning arrangement.

Aliyu made the statement while addressing ongoing political discussions ahead of 2027, noting that power shifted to the South in 2023 with the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and should remain there for another term in the interest of balance and national stability.

He argued that allowing the South to complete a full leadership cycle would help sustain trust among Nigeria’s regions, warning that an early return of power to the North could disrupt the fragile political understanding that underpins the zoning system.

The former governor said his position supports continuity within the current southern-led administration, suggesting that if it seeks a second term, the presidency should still remain in the South rather than rotate back in 2027.
